Ceramic Building Materials

By S Garside-Neville

Introduction

A small amount of fragmentary material was submitted for examination.  The material ranged in date from possibly the medieval to the post medieval period.

Medieval material/Post medieval material

Forms present include bricks and plain roof tile, all of which could be medieval to post medieval date. Unfortunately, most of the material is so fragmentary in nature, it is only possible to suggest very broad dating at this time. A brick fragment from 1008 has measurements and features which could be medieval in date (14th century onwards), but it has been reused.  This means that it might easily have been gathered from elsewhere, possibly in the post medieval period, for use on site.

One fragment of roofing material looks as though it might be worn, and is also burned, so could have been used in a hearth.

Other material

A couple of fragments of red sandstone are present. It is possible that the sandstone is burnt.

Conclusion

It is likely that the sample is mainly post medieval in date.

This sample should be retained for further study. Comparison with material of a more certain date might, in the future, help give it a closer date range.
