The material has been
recorded by fabric, form, weight and dimensions. A sample of representative and unusual material has been kept, with
plain fragments being discarded.
A scatter of Roman
material was present on the site. It
included a very abraded tegula, and a piece of thick brick of the type that may
have been used in a hypocaust.
Plain roofing material consisted of peg tile, with a
few examples of nib tile. Two fragments
of plain roof tile had impressions
of textiles
[6402]/[6453]. Also on plain roof tile
was animal pawprint impressions.
Besides plain ridge tile, there were examples of crested ridge
tile. The sample was strong on bricks
with classic medieval measurements. One
example had one corner cut off which hints at specialised use. The proportions of tile fabrics present was
different to that of sites in the city, with one new fabric being
identified. An abraded floor tile came
from context [6337]. This tile is of a
design found at Watton Priory, Humberside and is often found at manor sites in
small quantities (pers comm J Stopford).
Stone roofers were common on the site, and seem to be mostly of
limestone.
The records of the
material are currently on paper only and require inputting onto computer to
facilitate analysis of the data.
This is an important
opportunity to study an assemblage of ceramic building material from a high
status site close to York. As the site is rural, the brick, tile and stone
roofers were not affected by contamination or residual material present in the
intensive activity found on urban sites.
Consequently, it should be possible to group fabrics (and possibly
forms) into coherent phases when comparing the material with stratigraphic and
other finds information. The
distribution of the material should indicate which buildings were roofed with
stone or ceramics. The lithology of the
stone needs to be described out by a geologist.
Identification of the
textile impressions on the plain tile may be of interest.
It is recommended
that further research be carried out on this assemblage.
