Roman Material
The Roman material consists mainly of
roofing tile (tegula and imbrex), and brick. There is one fragment of tessera
from [2019] which will have come from flooring. There is a piece of flue tile from u/s, which has a cut out vent,
and will have come from a hypocaust system.
The possible fragment of vaulting tube from [2016] will have been used
to circulate hot air around the ceiling of a building.
There are only a few fragments of
medieval material, which are plain roof tile.
There are two complete bricks from
[2007] which are probably datable to the 18th century onwards. One is stock moulded, the other may have
been extruded and is overfired.
There are other small fragments of
tile-like material, which may be medieval or later. There are two examples of daub.
One of the fragments (from [2007]) is quite large and shows the outline
of the wattle and impressions of organic material.
