YORYM
1996.352 - FULFORD, YORK

There is a scatter of
Roman material across the area, consisting of tegula and imbrex (Roman roof
tile), brick, and flue tile (hypocaust material). Of particular interest is the top of a Roman finial, which would
have been used on the roof of a building, probably as part of a chimney.
This material differs
from that found in the city of York in that it is of a small scale compared to
the probably military massively sized material. It is possible that this material is the product of a civilian
industry, which may have grown up later than the military workings.
There is a good
amount of plain roof tile, some of which probably dates to the medieval
period. There are also brick fragments,
which by their measurements may also be medieval
There are some fragments of pan tile, which will
probably date
no earlier than the
17th century. Some brick sizes indicate
a later date than the classic medieval measurements, but by their method of
manufacture and measurements may be earlier than the 19th century.
The Roman material
indicates a Roman building in the area. However, there is not enough of this
material to suggest that the building is very close by. some of the material is very abraded, which
probably indicates plough movement, which could have dragged the material a
good distance away from the site of the building.
The medieval material
is very fragmentary, and is difficult to comment on. There are bricks clearly associate with buildings, but the
measurements and appearance of these bricks make it difficult to confidently
date the material. While not being
medieval in character, they are not definitely Victorian.
Further work on the
sample would be of benefit as material from just outside the city of York has
rarely been examined. New fabrics may
indicate different products being drawn into the hinterlands of the city.
