YORYM 1997.3 - TANNER ROW, YORK

CERAMIC BUILDING MATERIAL

S Garside-Neville

The Roman material consists of roofing tile (tegula) and building bricks.  The tegula in this sample is in two sizes.  One size is large and the other small.  The large size (identified in context 2003) is probably associated with the earlier military phases of occupation in York.    The smaller size is present in context 2002.  Some of the material shows signs of reuse (mortar along broken edges).

The medieval material consists of peg and plain roofing tile.  14th century or later fabrics are present in context 1011.  Some of the material shows signs of reuse.   However, much of the medieval material is in large fragments, so that complete measurements can be taken.

Further work on this sample would be appropriate to ascertain more complete data on fabrics and measurements.
