CERAMIC BUILDING MATERIALS

S Garside Neville

This small sample consists of plain tile and field drain.  The plain tile could be either peg tile or nib tile, which was used for roofing from the medieval period onwards.    The field drain is identified as such by the refined fabric and the fine, regular sanding.   The field drain appears to be a horseshoe shaped form, which would have been used in tandem with a flat ceramic sole plate.  It is an earlier form of drain, so may be mid 19th century in date.

Further work on this sample is not necessary, but it should be retained for comparative purposes.
