Roman Material
Roman roofing material (imbrex and tegula) are present in the sample. The size of the material is small compared to typical large-scale material found in the centre of York. Also present are fragments of brick which may have been used in the construction of a hypocaust or walls.
Medieval Material
There
are a few fragments of plain roofing material which will date from the 13th
century onward. These appear as
residual in Post med contexts
Post medieval Material
The
Post medieval material consists of small fragments of brick. The fabric indicates an 18th century or
later date. The complete brick from
2002 is probably 18th century or later, and appears to have a slight curve to
it, as well as being slop-moulded.
Recommendations
It
is recommended that this sample is retained to be included in any further
research undertaken into the archaeology of this area of York. In particular, the Roman tile sample may
help characterise the later Roman ceramic building material industry in York.
