Some
of the fragments of plain roofing tile may be medieval in date. There is one fragment with a splashed glaze,
which is a medieval feature.
Judging
by the fine moulding sand some of the roofing plain tile (which has two
circular or square pegholes) is 17th century or later. There is also pantile, which can date from
the 17th century onwards, but the examples here probably date from no earlier
than the 18th. There are two examples
of floor tile, both of which are not glazed.
This type dates from the 17th century onwards.
Brick
is well represented, but judging by the measurements and fabrics mostly dates
from the 17th century onward. The
classic purple-yellow London stock fabric is present. The red-orange brick in 4/003 may be the earliest brick in the
sample.
This
sample is mostly early post-medieval in date, with a good range of fabrics and
forms. The brick samples should be
washed so that the features of manufacture can be easily characterised. The sample should be retained for further
study.
