Introduction

There were 2 boxes of ceramic building material.   There is a database in Access 2 available for this site.

Medieval material

The medieval material comprises roof tile in the form, of plain tile and ridge tile, and brick.  The brick, from context 1001, has measurements typical of medieval examples.

Post medieval material

Post medieval material is represented by pan tile and brick.  The brick can be divided into two types.  There is slop moulded brick, often with a silty fabric and turning mark.  There are three examples in context 1001 of bricks with a fine orange fabric.  These bricks also have a tapering thickness, and upper surfaces that are either cut or very worn.    It is possible that these are gauged bricks which have been cut so that they could be used in a door or window arch.  This type of brickwork came into use during the 17th century.   Another explanation may be that the smooth surfaces were actually worn down because the bricks were used for flooring.  It is also possible, judging by the breadth measurements, that they are medieval in date - as is the other brick from context 1001.    However, the fine orange fabric is not typical of medieval brick.  Context 1001 is an internal wall that was erected along with the main build of the late 17th or early 18th century house, so the bricks have been reused.
