Ceramic Building Materials

S Garside-Neville

Introduction

There are two small-medium bags of ceramic building materials from this site.

Medieval Material

There are fragments of plain roofing tile.  These could represent either peg tile or nib tile, but there is no diagnostic piece to indicate which method of suspension was used.   One of the fabrics, a purple silty type, is sometimes associated with Hull/Beverley products.

Post medieval material

There is one fragment of Pan tile.  Pan tile was used in this country from around the 17th century.  This piece looks highly manufactured so is probably either 18th or 19th century in date.

Conclusion

This sample should be retained for further study, at which time it should be recorded by a recognised ceramic building materials specialist.
