13 June 2009 -  Medieval Tile Workshop with Diana Hall - Tiles and Architectural Ceramics Society, UK

The tile maker Diana Hall has agreed to run a demonstration workshop for up to 15 people looking at the materials and the various processes involved in medieval tile making. A simple lunch will be served on the day.

15-17 June 2009 - Repair of traditionally constructed brickwork  Weald & Downland Open Air Museum, Chichester, UK

A look at the principals of repair, causes of failure and decay, inappropriate materials and practices, techniques for selecting methods of repair, cutting out bricks and taking out defective joints, stitch repairs and reinforcements, patch pointing using lime mortar, reversing bricks and use of slips, plastic repairs and cleaning of brickwork. 29 June 2009 - Basic brickwork for homeowners – Weald & Downland Open Air Museum, Chichester, UK

A day of lectures and practical sessions for homeowners who need to understand more about bricks and bricklaying. The morning session will cover the characteristics of bricks, the historical background, conservation, care and repair of historic brickwork including an introduction to lime mortars. During the afternoon there will be practical sessions on basic bricklaying including techniques, setting out and bonding arrangements, profiles and corners, and plumbing points, gauges, lines and levels. 13 July 2009 - Brick and Tile in the Middle Ages – Leeds Medieval Congress, UK

Brick and tile were extensively used in the middle ages in north-western Europe both in cities and in rural buildings. Dating techniques are becoming more sophisticated and two of the papers look at the relatively new technique of optical luminescence and the insights this provides into the dating of early brick in England.

10-13 September 2009 – European Meeting on Ancient Ceramics – London, UK

London's EMAC '09, coinciding with Wedgwood's 250th anniversary, will have a special themed session "From Craft to Science", to promote and discuss the study of ceramics produced in the wake of the Industrial Revolution. In addition, there will be a one-day excursion to Stoke-on- Trent on Sunday 13th, to visit the newly refurbished Wedgwood Visitor Centre and Museum. The following themes will be covered as well: Technology and provenance, Methodological developments, Dating, Technical ceramics, Building materials, Islamic ceramics, and Residue analysis.

14-15 September 2009 - Jointing and pointing and re-pointing of historic brickwork - Weald & Downland Open Air Museum, Chichester, UK

An exploration of the historical and technical development of jointing and pointing from the Tudor period to the early 20th century. The course will cover tools, materials, mortars and practice. 16 September 2009 - English brickwork, Tudor to Edwardian - Weald & Downland Open Air Museum, Chichester, UK

An overview of the historical development of the bricks, mortars and manner of manipulating them that stamped its character on Tudor, Jacobean, Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian brickwork.
